The Loft Holiday Cottage at Whiteleys Farm, Stranraer.
'The Loft' holiday home is well situated for some of the best that
Galloway has to offer. On this page we offer some links which we hope will
be of use to you in planning your visit to Whiteleys Farm. If you want a
break from driving, buses to Portpatrick, Sandhead (with its extensive
beach), Portpatrick, Port Logan (where the TV series "2,000 Acres of Sky"
was filmed) and Drummore - the most southerly village in Scotland - stop
outside our gate.
Golfers are in paradise here, with 4 courses within very easy reach.
The
Galloway Golf Classic is an event which is gaining a larger following every year.
'The Loft' makes an ideal base from which to follow this competition.
Meanwhile, within easy drive of 'The Loft'
holiday cottage you will find Stranraer Golf Club, in a wonderful position
overlooking Loch Ryan. Designed by James Braid, this 18-hole course is
both challenging and well sited. At Portpatrick you will find the
cliff-top Portpatrick
Dunskey Golf Course and Clubhouse. With stunning sea views over the Irish Sea and 18
holes to test golfers of all levels this is a great course. The
Dinvin Course, also at Portpatrick, offers 9-holes and is ideal for the beginner
or those wanting a quicker round. About 2
miles outside of Portpatrick (around 5 miles from 'The Loft;) is the
Lagganmore
Golf Course and hotel.
The Mull of Galloway now offers a
tearoom with spectacular views out across the sea to Ireland, the Isle of
Man and even England on a clear day. The lighthouse there is open to the
public in season, and the RSPB have a strong presence at the Mull too.
Closer at hand is the picturesque harbour and village of Portpatrick, with
its
restaurants, bars, antique shops and summertime events such as
Lifeboat Week, Sailing Ships week and the Folk Festival.
Given that Dumfries & Galloway describes itself as 'The Natural Place'
our food and drink is, naturally, of a high standard. Fresh meat, game and
locally caught seafood all find their way into our shops,
smokehouses and restaurants. The town of Castle Douglas, about 50
miles to the east of Stranraer, has re-invented itself as a 'Food Town'
and promotes local produce, including organic food, to a wider market.
Closer to hand we have smokehouses and plenty of 'farm gate' sales
marketing fresh eggs, vegetables, fruit and potatoes. For 'natural' food, you've come
to the 'natural place'!
If you wish to explore further afield for the day, visit the Galloway
Forest Park, with opportunities to walk, or mountain bike (the legendary
Seven Stanes Mountain Bike route is to be found there), ride
your horse or pony along horse
trails, go fishing or just simply relax and unwind with a picnic. Booklovers should
find Wigtown Booktown rewarding. There
they will find an increasing number of bookshops and activity centred
around books and authors.
During the summer we have a number of local agricultural shows, where folk
get together, compete for best-of-breeds, shearing, display their beasts
and produce, and generally have fun, meet old friends and enjoy a wee dram
or two. You will find any number of village Fetes and Galas happening
across the region in Summer too, and visitors are always welcome to join
in the fun and games.
As one might expect, the light and sheer scope of Galloway attracts
many artists. Over the last few years they have introduced an innovative
'Open Day' program, allowing the public access right into their studios
and workshops. If you wish to purchase some of the local artwork, visit
the
Waterloo Art Gallery in Stranraer, where many of the best artists
display (and sell) their work.
Finally, a brief word about
public or gardens which open to visitors during the spring, summer and
autumn. We have a goodly number of large
gardens hereabouts, such as the RHS Logan Botanic
Garden with its exotic plants and nearby Logan House Garden. Castle Kennedy Gardens at Lochinch, Dunskey
Gardens and the deservedly famous
Glenwhan Gardens.
'The Loft' holiday home is available throughout the year with bookings
running from Saturday to Saturday. However, short breaks may be available
from time to time, please contact us for details.
